Clinical Septomics

As part of the 1st funding phase of the ZIK Septomics, the Paul Martini Research Group Clinical Septomics, headed by Prof. Dr. med. Frank M. Brunkhorst, incorporated its clinical expertise into research on the development of sepsis. The group thus was an important link between basic research and clinical practice. Clinical Septomics was responsible for the collection and preparation of patient samples for cellular or microbiological examinations and placed them in the bio-sample bank. From there, they could be used to further address scientific questions of the ZIK Septomics research groups. In addition, the group was responsible for reviewing research results for their potential clinical benefit as well as the training of clinical trial staff. Prof. Frank M. Brunkhorst was awarded the endowed professorship for “Clinical Sepsis Research” of the Paul Martini Foundation in 2008. The research group was mainly financed by the Free State of Thuringia by the STIFT foundation (Stiftung Technologie, Innovation und Forschung Thüringen).
