Metabolome analyses in human pathogenic fungi described in a Pearl
26.08.2020

As metabolome analyses allow the identification and quantification of the complete set of metabolites of a biological specimen to a given time point, this rather novel OMICS-tool is beginning to be used also in fungal research. Philipp Brandt and Enrico Garbe, both doctoral candidates, and Dr. Slavena Vylkova of the JRG Host Fungal Interfaces present an overview of the current state of the growing number of metabolomics research approaches in human pathogenic fungi. In their Pearl article in Plos Pathogens, they point out that this rapidly evolving comprehensive technique assists greatly in linking genotype and phenotype of fungal pathogens, which gives insights into biological processes, including adaption to changing environments. Furthermore, metabolome analyses will foster a comprehensive understanding of host-fungal interaction in the future.
